Somerset Total Communication

STC is a lot more than just signs and symbols, but here are a list of videos showing the signs used for the Induction level course.

Remember.
Components of Speech, Language and Communication are a combination of:

  • Speech
  • Expressive language
  • Understanding
  • Social and Functional use of language 


Speech, Language and Communication Need is a breakdown of any of the above.

STC uses all senses, as well as other tools including: Gesture, Body Language, Facial expression, objects, Photographs, Symbols, Signing, Speech and writing.

STC is important because the law requires fair communication is available to all

  • Disability Discrimination Act
  • The Equality Act (2010)
  • Every Child Matters (Be Healthy, Stay Safe, Enjoy and Achieve, Make a Positive Contribution, Achieve Economic Well-Being)


Symbols are: A pictorial representation of a word, idea or concept. STC symbols come from American Rebus (Makaton) Symbols.
